Have you ever wanted to use a limited palette, but felt too attached to that sacred tube of sap green? Join me in exploring the wide array of colors that can be mixed from simply red, yellow and blue.

In this ArtByte, I explain saturation and color mixing in practical terms. You will learn about the importance of gray and how to mix it, as well as how each of our paint colors lean toward other colors. There are three exercises in this ArtByte and four short videos, in additon to many images and helpful instruction.

I marked the level as beginner and the media as oil, but most of what I explain is appropriate for higher levels as well, and just about any medium that uses color.

*FYI, most of the information in this ArtByte is included in my book, "Daily Painting," which is available on Amazon.com.

"I like the way you break things down into simple steps, Carol, so it all becomes understandable. It's finally properly sinking in how essential it is to learn and keep in mind which way the paint colours lean. An absolute bargain, too, for such a lot of useful guidance and information, all delivered in a lovely calm, clear way."

"Best $ I spent in a LONG time! Thanks Mme Marine for your generosity in sharing this gold mine of informations. I now have explanations on why some paints mix differently and why it's so hard to get certain colors... I would always get to them eventually but a lot of the time it was by accident and then I would not remember what I did! Now I know and will always know because I've printed all the charts that are set up as work of art on my studio's wall!"

"Like most people, I was handed a list of paints in my first class, bought them, and while I've tweaked them somewhat, I've never tried just outright doing without most of them. This was hugely useful in thinking about what's really necessary and what's nice to have on your palette, but not necessarily critical. Well done. :)"

"Carol, this is a wonderfully informative tutorial. I re-learned things I had completely forgotton (I learned much of this back when dirt was invented......). Even better, you gave the most sensible explanation I have ever heard about colors LEANING in one direction or another -- a true AHA moment for me! I'm so inspired to get back to painting after many, many years away from it! Great job!!"

"The best thing since sliced bread! This was such an immediate help to me that I used it in a painting I was working on. Actually scraped the part that was wrong off, and reworked it with notes from the ArtByte next to me. The non-color that I had been struggling with is now clear as beautiful grays to be made with just the right hue.

Thanks so much for this Carol! Keep these great ArtBytes coming please, they are so helpful to those of us that have no access to workshops."

"Very helpful! Before, if I were to put into my own words what saturation is, I would have said it is intense color. Problem is I saw brown and other darks as saturated because they seemed intense. Maybe I saw opaque as intense. After following the tutorial, I have no excuse for not understanding that terminology. Thank you for explaining what had never been made clear to me in the past."

"Carol, I loved the video and can't wait to move on to the next one! Sooooooo glad you did these and that more will be coming - this was even better than putting out a DVD for sale (which is what I was hoping the surprise was - but this surpassed it). I'm on vacation with my husband (it's a ski trip - he skis and I paint) and I just ran put of canvas boards and thought I was going to be bored stiff for the rest of the trip, so you can imagine how happy I was to see these new tutorials out!!!"

"I really enjoyed this tutorial Carol. Thanks for putting this together for all of us that haven't attended one of your workshops. I found your explainations easy to follow and certainly made understanding saturation and color mixing clearer even though I had heard this many times before. I think this tutorial just made the dots connect. For me, these ArtBytes are like taking a mini workshop and well worth the money spent. I'll certainly look forward to more from you and others."
