The Ten Minute Challenge

This is more of an exercise than a simple "paint this photo."

The rules: Get a timer. Divide your canvas or canvases (I used 2 - 6x6in Raymar canvases) into 8 or so small squares (or rectangles). They should be smallish – a couple or 3 inches square or thereabouts – they don’t have to be perfect. Now choose ONE object. Just one. Set your timer for 10 minutes. Paint your object in the first square. When the timer goes off – stop! I mean it. Repeat until you are done. You can rotate your object and/or change the light for each new square.

The objective: You want to get a feel for your object in terms of brush strokes. Make sure you SQUINT and SIMPLIFY! Whatever you do, DON’T get bogged down by the details or you’ll never finish. Try to think of it NOT as an apple (or whatever you’ve chosen) but rather just shapes and colors and values. Paint what you see – not what you THINK you see. If you find yourself doing the same thing every time – experiment! You won’t learn unless you try something different. Expect the first one to be bad – you are getting a feel for just how long 10 minutes is. They will only get better. I can’t wait to see how you guys do on this one!!

The DPW Challenge is about sharing, learning, and fun.

Each challenge consists of an image - either a photo or a painting - and a description or instructions. In most cases, participating is as simple as submitting your version of the image.

Anyone can participate by submitting an entry to any challenge - there are no deadlines! You can even submit more than once to a challenge. Any 2D media is welcome and don't be afraid to interpret.

Only for the non-fundraising challenges, please be sure to follow the spirit and the letter of the challenge. For example, each submission must be painted after the challenge is posted!

Simply click on the challenge you want to enter, then click on the Submit to the Challenge! link on the challenge page, fill in the dialog form that appears, and upload an image no larger than 1 mb and at least between 300 to 500 pixels tall or wide.

As a bonus, even if you are not a member of DPW, your challenge entries will be displayed with prices and links for purchase, in addition to description, painting media, and size. So be sure to enter all the information so someone can buy your painting!

And, the best part is there are no fees or commissions. You will also be able to mark your painting as sold when someone does buy it.
