Candid images of children are precious and while this subject is looking at the viewer, I attempted to capture a childhood moment of my cousin's daughter picking apples with the family.
This little portrait is painted on Ampersand's Aquabord which is a 1/4 inch board coated with clay. I work fairly wet on wet to take advantage of the clay surface, blurring edges and placing colors next to each other to blend themselves and encourage loose, drippy marks. My goal is to achieve a likeness that is loose and filled with vibrant, fresh color.
The finished painting is sealed with archival gloss varnish. A watercolor on Aquabord is similar to an oil or acrylic painting because it is much stronger than paper and doesn't need to be matted and framed under glass. This small size can be displayed on a small easel as it is.
