Values are often hard to hang onto in a painting, especially with the lure of delicious, but distracting, color options. Your challenge this week is to choose a well-lit subject and paint it from life using ONLY a range of grays. The goal is to observe, establish, and maintain the values till the end of the painting process. Here are a few tips: 1) Pre-mix a range of 5 grays in a strand with white on one end and black on the other. Take the time to get the value progression well established. 2) Squint to observe the shadow and light families. 3) Start with dark family, and work to light. 4) Use a fully loaded brush and don't be miserly with the paint. 5) Save pure white for spectral highlights and pure black for darkest lowlights and calligraphy. 6) Have fun.
Please be sure to follow the spirit and the letter of the challenge.
For example, each submission must be painted after the challenge is posted.
