I am an abstract painter and a printmaker. My work is influenced by the repeated lines, shapes & patterns found in landscape, architecture & plants.  I’m interested in contrasts of light & shadow, transparency & opacity, concealing and revealing.

While much of my work is very precise & geometric, my gel prints have an entirely different feeling, and I LOVE this process!  The layers and textures are more organic, less planned & somewhat unpredictable.  There’s a lot of trial & error & experimentation in gel printing.  I’ve learned to manipulate the gelatin plate to produce a time-worn patina that feels at once both modern & traditional – these are not your great-grandmother’s botanical prints. I’ll try printing with nearly any shape or object from unexpected household bits & bobs to flowers, weeds & branches collected on my daily walks.  The results are uniquely contemporary.

About me…

Trained as an engineer, I worked in the software industry for many years, studied painting and printmaking along the way, and finally abandoned the techie world to paint full-time. I grew up in a very contemporary home that my parents designed and built themselves, so I come from a family of technical creatives and fiercely stubborn DIYers.  I’ve always been interested in how things are put together & what’s inside, beneath the surface. This shows up in my work – hiding, revealing, building & layering, then quieting things down to make a concise statement.

I belong to a shared group studio near my home in Northern Virginia. I teach workshops and classes in gel printing, and I curate an exhibit program for a nearby vineyard featuring local artists with an emphasis on abstract work.  I’m involved with several arts organizations in the Washington, DC area, and I exhibit regularly in solo and group shows.
