When?
When I was 10-12 years old, my mom found a woman, Libby Smith, who taught oil painting classes on Saturday. So, for 6-7 years, I went to “art” class every Saturday. I loved it and learned a lot from Mrs. Smith. I did not study art in college and as life went on, also did not make room for art in my life as life got in the way. After retiring, I went back to oil painting and have been taking classes, both in person and online, and the occasional workshop.
Why?
Why painting? Why oil painting? Why landscapes or still lifes? Just why? It is because I have to do something and why not do what I love? Oil painting because it is what I started with and is the most comfortable and, in my opinion, the most forgiving. The colors can be very vibrant and saturated or contrasting that, very subdued and subtle. The techniques can be varied and oil painting is as different as each artist. I strive to be a representational artist.
I love painting landscapes because the subject matter is so in front of my face everywhere! Living in the north Georgia mountains provides so many possibilities for paintings from rural settings, to mountains, sunsets/sunrises, lakes, barns, cows and other farm animals and everything in between. Just driving to the next town has me taking photos and planning the next painting!
While I love landscapes, I’ve also been taking an online face & figure class the past two years. That has been quite a change. It is always good to learn new skills and increase the breadth of one’s scope of painting.
Who?
I live in the north Georgia (USA) mountains with my husband and retired a few years ago after a 30+ year career in the IT industry. I grew up in the Atlanta area and lived there most of my life. We moved from Atlanta in 2018 and have never regretted it!
Where and what?
My art is on display and for sale in Ellijay, Georgia, at the Gilmer Arts center, in Blue Ridge, Georgia at the Blue Ridge Arts Center, and in Young Harris, Georgia at Cable’s Gallery.
