I use oils to paint what I see, seeking to capture what I find beautiful: the morning light on a ridgetop, interesting patterns of mountains, reflections on a lake, the delicious colors and shapes of fruits, flowers and other objects. It’s a beautiful world—and painting has helped me notice and appreciate it more by making me look more carefully.

Living near the Canadian Rockies gives me continual inspiration during frequent hikes and ski outings with my family, and during occasional plein air painting sessions. Switching between painting landscapes and still-lifes allows me to explore both beauty outdoors and in the everyday objects indoors.

After a full-time career as a professor, when I studied (through courses, workshops, books) and practiced painting part-time, I can now spend much more time at my easel and look forward to the journey of learning, exploring, and capturing more of the beauty in the world.
