"The Beauty of Imperfection"
Piedmont Pastel Society - watch for updates

Students will explore fearless mark making, negative painting, exaggeration, simplification and bold vs neutral color in this intensive 3-day workshop taught by PSA-Master Pastelist, Jen Evenhus. You really only need a few good ideas - and you'll learn how to run with them.

Plan to throw perfection out the window, allowing you permission to explore, experiment and play with pastels and other materials like ink, markers, brushes and charcoal in a contemporary impressionist, abstract style. Students will manipulate shapes, composition, space, "pretty" and "ugly" color, line and happy little accidents to reveal a masterpiece.

There will be drawing, discussion, mini-demos, painting, timed exercises, group critiques, individual coaching and more painting. We won't create pretty pictures, we'll produce dynamic, show-stopping works of art!

The Beauty of Imperfection
- Beyond Local Color

Students will explore fearless mark-making, negative painting, exaggeration, simplification and bold color in this intense 3-day workshop taught by Jen Evenhus, PSA-Master Pastelist, IAPS-MC, NPS-Distinguished Pastelist, PSWC.

Plan to throw perfection out the window, giving you permission to explore, experiment and play with pastels and other tools and materials like markers, twigs, brushes and charcoal in a loose impressionist abstract style. We will manipulate shapes, composition, space, "pretty" and "ugly" color, line and happy little accidents to reveal and recognize the accidental masterpiece before we cover it up. We'll ask ourselves "What if . . ." each step of the way - "What if ... I moved that stand of trees?""What if ... I painted them red instead of green?" "What if ... I used black in my landscape?"

We will be creating exciting underpaintings, sketching for composition and value, discussion, demos, painting, timed exercises, critiques, individual coaching and more painting. We won't create pretty pictures, we'll produce energetic, show-stopping works of art!

Because striving for perfection leads to paralysis, Master Pastelist Jen Evenhus kicks perfection out the window, giving you permission to explore, experiment and play with pastel and other materials like ink, markers, brushes, and graphite. We will use a contemporary style of painting that encompasses impressionism, expressionism and abstraction as we explore shapes, edges, positive and negative space, bold vs neutral color, fearless mark-making and happy little accidents.

Emphasis will be on pastel application, composition, color, value, simplification and movement while we explore techniques to turn a mundane subject into a masterpiece! There will be demos, timed exercises, drawing, painting, one-on-one coaching, group discussions and critiques. We will work from photo reference of buildings, landscapes, cloudscapes, still lifes and florals with some plein air sketching if feasible. Come with an open mind and willing spirit!

Jennifer is an established national pastel workshop instructor and show judge and is well-known for her 10-minute pastel paintings, an exersize her students come to love! Jennifer holds the designations IAPS-MC, PSA-MP, NPS-DP and PSWC.

"The Beauty of Imperfection -
Brave, Bold, Beautiful"
Dunedin Fine Art Center February 2-3, 2018

Jennifer dares you to be brave while exploring your inner voice, letting go of perfection and playing with a variety of materials to create bold expressive works of art as we step fearlessly into the unknown. Using timed exercises to loosen up and reveal your innate intuition forces us to use bold strokes with wild abandon, creating happy little accidents and mark-making that reveal your personal style.

Students will work with landscape photos provided by instructor, with their own photo reference, with still life objects, and, weather permitting, do some plein air sketching. Along with a good variety of soft and hard pastels, and good sanded pastel paper, other materials like ink, markers, brushes and graphite will be used. We will use a contemporary impressionist, expressionist, and abstract styles as we explore shapes, composition, positive and negative space, bold vs neutral color and mark-making.

There will be plenty of challenging exercises, instructor demos, one-on-one coaching, critiques, discussions, and painting throughout this intense fun 2-day workshop with PSA Master Pastelist Jen Evenhus. Come with an open mind and a willing spirit!
