"The Beauty of Imperfection" Workshop by Jen Evenhus

In order to find authentic beauty, we must move beyond perfection and dig deep to release the creative souls we were born with! Your pastel paintings will be filled with new energy, dynamic composition and unique color using simplification, confident strokes, mark-making, exaggeration, and negative painting in these fun, intense workshops taught by Jen Evenhus. Jennifer is an established national pastel workshop instructor and show judge and is well-known for her 10-minute pastel paintings, an exercise her students come to love! Jen has earned the designation of PSA-Master Pastelist, IAPS-Master Circle Member, NPS-Distinguished Pastelist, and PSWC Signature Member and is a member of the American Impressionist Society.

Because striving for perfection leads to paralysis, Jen kicks it out the window, giving you permission to explore, experiment and play with pastels and unconventional tools like twigs, markers, brushes, and rags. We will manipulate shapes, design, space, and line. We will move beyond local color into a new realm of uninhibited joy, using whatever color our muse demands, all the while watching for happy little accidents to reveal themselves before we cover them up. We'll ask ourselves "What if . . ." each step of the way - recognizing new possibilities as they appear.

Emphasis will be on pastel application, composition, bold vs neutral color, values, various edges, simplification and movement. There will be demos, my beloved timed exercises, drawing, painting, one-on-one coaching, group discussions and critiques. We will use a contemporary style that encompasses impressionism, expressionism and abstraction as we work from photo reference of buildings, landscapes, and cloudscapes, and from still lifes and florals with plein air sketching when possible.Come with an open mind and willing spirit!

Pacific Northwest Art School Pastel Workshop
August 2 - 4, 2019 (3 days) |
Coupeville, WA
Emphasis will be on simplification and exaggeration of landscape forms and flower shapes. You are encouraged to let go of perfection and play with a variety of materials to create bold expressive works of art that will move you to the next level of your painting journey. Using timed exercises to loosen up, you will use bold strokes with wild abandon, creating happy little accidents and mark-making that will expand your creative language and give you the confidence to work on your own after the workshop.

Students will work with landscape photos provided by instructor, with their own photo and drawing reference, with flowers & vases they bring, and, weather permitting, do some plein air sketching. Along with a good variety of soft and hard pastels, and good sanded pastel paper, other materials like markers, twigs, brushes and graphite will be used.

We will explore contemporary impressionist, expressionist, and abstract styles as we study shapes, values, edges, composition, positive and negative space, bold vs neutral color and mark-making.There will be plenty of challenging exercises, instructor demos, one-on-one coaching, critiques, discussions, and painting throughout this intense fun 3-day workshop with Master Pastelist Jen Evenhus. Come with an open mind and a willing spirit!
