Shapes! Value! Color! . . . an Organizing Approach
May 11 - 11, 2019 (one day)
Have you ever approached a clean white piece of watercolor paper, wondering "Where should I begin?" After years of classes and workshops, I realized that I needed a way to synthesize the information my instructors had so generous imparted so my brain wasn't bombarding me with all of the disparate bits as I painted. I will share how I simplify my thought process in order to paint stronger watercolors by simplifying shapes, value and color, working from large shapes to small, painting in layers.
Pour for Glowing Watercolors
June 2 - 9, 2019 (8 days) |
Sierra Madre, CA
Learn to create looser, light-filled paintings by pouring your paint. Watercolor is most exquisite when left to mix and mingle on its own, but that can be intimidating! By setting aside your brushes and learning to put values to work, you will create juicy translucent color with just a few paints by glazing in luminous layers. Two Sunday sessions, June 2 and 9, from 1 to 5 pm.

Watercolor: Beginners and Beyond
July 14 - 21, 2019 (8 days) |
Sierra Madre, CA
This workshop is designed for artists who are new to watercolor and also for artists who want to revisit the basics of the medium. Watercolor gets a bad rap as being unforgiving and unpredictable when, in reality, it's fun and exhilarating. You will be amazed at the beautiful results you'll accomplish with basic watercolor techniques. Demonstrations and fun hands-on exercises will reinforce the lessons. Two Sundays, July 14 and July 21, 2019 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Flowers in Watercolor Using Negative Painting
August 11 - 18, 2019 (8 days) |
Sierra Madre, CA
Learn to paint luscious, expressive flowers using negative painting. Painting negative shapes (the shapes that occupy the space around the objects) is the quickest way to take your paintings to the next level. This fun workshop will help you understand what to look for to paint negative shapes and learn how to create depth in your floral paintings. Demonstrations and classroom exercises will help reinforce what you've learned. You will be amazed when flowers "magically" appear as you learn to paint what is NOT the subject of your painting! Two Sundays, August 11 and 18, 2019 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
