An artist since girlhood, I’ve found how important it is to my life, to paint in oil, watercolor, acrylic, and pastel. I have dabbled in paper making, clay pottery, wire work, soft sculpture, book making, and print making. I teach classes and workshops in painting and creativity at Braided Streams Studio. Showing & selling my work plays its’ part in completing the creative circle.
Water borne media was my concentration for years, and in the last decade I’m exploring soft pastel, a dry media of pure pigment with a little binder. I use a wet media underpainting, either watercolor, ink, acrylic printmaking or wetted pastel, upon which to build dry pastel layers. The result is a combination of effects.
I gravitate to landscapes in our verdant state of Maine, the trees, the coast, our waters that hold some reflective secret. The changing sky, shifting lights, glowing hills, and each winter’s monochromatic compositions present challenging subjects that are a joy to consider.
An artists’ history and emotional memory find a place in paintings, and I know what an abstract is saying sometimes only after it has been painted. During the process, I am too close to see clearly.
Since 2019 I’m serving as president of the Pastel Society of Maine (PSME). I am a member of Upcountry Artists, Pastel Society of New Hampshire (PSNH), and Central Massachusetts Pastel Society (CMPS), and exhibit my work at Art Space Gallery in Rockland, Maine.
