Pastels are not chalk, but compressed, pure pigment.  Pigment is what gives color to art materials.  I have been working in pastels since high school, but now I am also enjoying the new PanPastels.  They are soft pastels in a small pan.  You can see a demo on my blog from several of these pastel paintings.
