I like to start each painting with a carefully thought-out plan. I can almost see the details in my mind’s eye.  Yet somewhere in the process of laying paint to paper or canvas, surprises happen. Good surprises make painting exciting. The painting takes on a life of its own and we can begin our conversation.  Sometimes though the surprises are unpleasant, and painting becomes a struggle; but that can be even more productive.

I work in both oils and watercolors, with the subject suggesting the medium. Most recently I’ve explored dog portraits, but my interests range from still lifes to landscapes, and the occasional human figure. My guilty pleasure is painting horses.
