I have a BA in Fine Art from Queens College and a Masters in Education from Hofstra. I studied pastel portraits with Dan Slapo, Master Pastelist, portraits in oils with Rob Silverman and landscape painting with Howard Rose.
I consider myself a realist. I try to capture what I see in the lights and the shadows. Painting still lifes allows me to create drama in my compositions. Lately, I am concentrating on transparencies. I create still life paintings using glass, water, cellophane and ice. I love seeing what happens with the light, how the colors and shapes change in the composition, and I challenge myself to reproduce what I see using oil paint. I feel that this gives my paintings a different perspective, one that creates tension and mystery. I hope that my paintings engage the viewer to look closely at all the changes in light and transparencies that are happening in the composition.
When I am painting a landscape, I look for a composition that has dramatic lighting and shadows. The same is true of my portraits. I try to capture the expression of the subject and a true likeness. I try to not only to have a likeness but try and create a feeling of presence.
Everyday is a day for painting. When I am not painting, I am thinking about it as I go about my everyday life. I look for interesting compositions that could potentially become a painting and photograph it.
