Portrait Deliberate Practice Series 82/250. "VIRGIL VAN DIJK", 8" x 10", Oil on Board.
I'm still stealing time to paint and this guy has been on my mind for a while. Virgil is the most complete defender I've seen in years and I've been watching this game since 1978. He reads the game so well, he is highly focused and fully concentrated on his next moves. If Liverpool have achieved great things last season, it was clearly down to this guys development. He makes the game look so easy and his interceptions look so effortless, but that is the true sign of a legend, a football great! I used Winsor & Newton Artist oil. The drawing was done with a Zig Art & Graphic Twin Felt pen (number 73). After the sketch, I worked with the insidie-out technique to finish the whole piece. I worked his flesh colours with mostly yellow ochre, brilliant red and white and hints of cobalt blue and viridian green. I also went a bit thicker with my brushstrokes and I did a lot of softening of the hard edges towards the end.
