I started this piece very differently from my usual painting procedures -- not from a reference photo or a plein air outing, but from pure abstract manipulation of colors and shapes on paper, waiting for an image to emerge, then look for reference photos that could be used to develop it. I really loved this process which forces me me look at the abstract design of shapes and color relationships instead of "things". Hope to try it more often in the future!
