Media: Watercolor on Arches #140 Cold Press Paper

A little in-studio work done from a previous (ruined) plein air painting attempted at Laguna Beach in southern California. The wind was incessant that day and relentlessly dried my page as soon as I put done a wash... I suppose this is part of the fun (challenge!) of painting in the great outdoors -- one has to contend with the elements and make the best of it. Still sometimes I envy fellow oil painters who at least do not need to worry about the drying...
Trying to practice as many different strokes as possible with my 3/4" flat sable brush, using its corners and sorts, on both wet and dry paper to see how much I can accomplish just by manipulating this one brush. Also trying to pay more attention to the abstract shapes of different value that hints at "things" such as grass, rock, sandy beach, etc., without actually delineating each of them. I always believed the fun and beauty of painting lies narrowly between realism and abstraction. It was fun. :-) This painting is mounted on hardboard and varnished with clear acrylic matte varnish with UV protection, and can be displayed or framed without glass.
