The beginnings and ends of shadow lie between the light and darkness and may be infinitely diminished and infinitely increased. Shadow is the means by which bodies display their form. The forms of bodies could not be understood in detail but for shadow. Leonardo da Vinci
I am intrigued by the shadows cast by the trees - they seem to have a personality of their own, a character preceding the tree and yet so independent! So I chose to paint the tree only slightly in the lower right corner so as to leave it to the viewer to gauge the form of tree from its shadow.
