The Dingle Peninsula, on the southwest coast of Ireland, is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Mary Beth and I have done the Slea Head drive there four or five times, and we never tire of it. While we have dozens of photos, the reference photo for this painting was taken by Irish photographer John Keating, and used with his permission, of course. The islands in the painting are the Blaskets, and I think, although I'm not positive, that the smallest in the far distance is the most westerly point of Europe. If you sailed from that point toward North America, the first land you'd encounter would be Newfoundland. If you sailed more to the northwest, I think the first land you'd find would be Iceland.
