The Galway Hooker is a three-sheet sailing vessel that cruises Galway Bay on the west coast of the Republic of Ireland. Galway Bay connects the city of Galway with the Atlantic Ocean. These interesting vessels are used for fishing and carrying freight. They are also the source of the name for a popular Irish ale.
My painting depicts an empty Galway Hooker bottle with a stylized image of one of the real Hookers. Be sure to mouse over the painting to find the colors of the Irish flag flying on the head sail. I am taking bit of artist liberty here, as the flag does not appear on the ale bottle. Interestingly, the well-worn book is about sailing and was published in 1859. My wife and I purchased the book at a used book store near the Hill of Tara on our most recent trip to Ireland. The cost was a mere €6, quite a bargain for such a beautiful book. The brown bud vase, which I have painted several times, was made by well-known Irish potter, Louis Mulcahy. The glass came from a discount department store here in the USA, but it works well with the blue on the Hooker bottle. Finally, an orange is trying to sneak in from the right (that seems to happen often in my paintings), headed for the left - a transition that is much needed in US life today!
