On one of our several trips to Ireland, Mary Beth and I stopped at an interesting pub in the village of Shannonbridge on the bank of the River Shannon. We got to chatting with the owner, and he mentioned that we were in the "new" part of the pub, the 1797 building having been added on to over the years. He volunteered to take us on a tour of the original pub, not open to the public. Our first stop was in the room that had the original bar. And what a still life painter's dream that was! The shelves behind the bar were filled with antique liquor bottles, some still holding their treasure. It was simply amazing! Then we followed him into a second room, and there we saw a magnificent and large old fireplace. It was a cool September afternoon, so the owner made a fire. I shot several photographs while we enjoyed learning about the history of the pub and the area. Those photos became the reference for several paintings, one of which was posted on DPW a few months ago. That painting, called "Irish Tea the Old Way" sold at my "I Am of Ireland" exhibit in November of 2019-- the first time it was shown in public. The present painting is a variation of the original one, but of course there are similarities. A third one is in progress that will be yet more different. I hope you enjoy seeing the paintings in this series. I certainly enjoyed creating them, for that day and that place on the Shannon is just one of the thousands of examples of the kindness and goodness of our emotional home -- the Republic of Ireland.
