Newgrange is a Neolithic passage grave in County Meath, Ireland. Likely built by Stone Age farmers in about 3200 BCE, Newgrange is older than Stonehenge and the Pyramids. It is regarded as the finest grave of its kind in Europe. Within Newgrange, the bodies of important people, possibly local priest-kings, were interred. During the winter solstice, for a few minutes each morning the rising sun shines in along the passage and into the burial chamber deep inside. Some believe this was possibly connected with a belief in an afterlife. In 1993 Newgrange was named a UNESCO World Heritage site. For more details: www.britanica.com and the Encyclopedia of Ireland.
On our first trip to Ireland in 2009 Mary Beth and I visited Newgrange and found it to be extremely interesting.
