Along with the red tea light candle, an old brown bottle, and a ceramic bottle, this painting features two metal objects-- a small copper pitcher purchased in an antique gallery in Ireland and a brass vase bought in India in 1975 while I was working in Pakistan and India. After I finished painting the five objects, I used all the remaining paint on my pallet, added some white and made the paint for the vertical background. The tiny amount of alizarin crimson left over from painting the candle gave the background a very slightly pink appearance. Sometimes it looks beige, depending on the light. My intent was to minimize the amount of paint wasted, however, I used more white than usual, so I'm not sure I accomplished my goal.
