The round towers of Ireland, built of stone in medieval times, are approximately 100 feet tall. Thought to have been “bell houses” or bell towers, they were all located adjacent to churches. Today, many of the nearby churches are in ruins, and some have disappeared completely, as is the case with the one in the painting. It’s believed that the round towers also provided refuge from invaders. Each tower contained several wood or stone floors connected by ladders, providing access for a large number of people. Today, the Irish round towers are of aesthetic value, adding much interest to an already magnificent landscape, and a reminder of a bit of Ireland’s interesting history.
