Uncracked eggs are particularly challenging to paint because they have very subtle transitions. Lately I've been having a luck putting the number two value (the one slightly darker than the lightest) down first, then putting the lightest on TOP of that. Then working on the shadow side. I'm not sure why that works better for me, but it seems to with eggs. I'm always trying stuff.
