Pine cones are a recurring theme for me. I found the background was more difficult to paint than the pine cone itself. I repainted it a few times because flat areas of color can be boring so I tried out a few different approaches; I wanted to create subtle brush marks without it becoming too distracting. The pine cone was fun to paint, the depth was created by the contrast of the dark interior and the light beige of the outer edges. The opacity of acrylic paint made it easier to refine the outer edges of the pine cone by cutting into them with the lighter color of the background. The quick drying times of acrylics are a benefit when it comes to painting over mistakes.
