Sailing Brig at Sea - A small unframed oil painting by Pennsylvania artist David Young. The brig was one of the smaller two-masted sailing ships. They were popular in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Brigs fell out of use with the arrival of the steam ship because they required a relatively large crew for their small size. Brigs were used for both naval and mercantile purposes. As merchant vessels, they plied mostly coastal trading routes, but oceanic voyages were not uncommon and some brigs were even used for whaling. An original oil painting on a gessoed Masonite panel 5" x 8" unframed. Full price of the painting, including free insured shipping is $175.00 to any destination within the Continental US.
