I have been enjoying the last several paintings painting from life. I'm usually painting birds, which means using reference material, so it's a pleasant change to actually be looking at something in 3D. I think it's easier to paint from life, painting from photo references requires more effort to enliven the painting. It's too easy to create a static painting. But when you paint from life, the painting is imbued with life, automatically.
