When I went for a walk early one morning while we were staying in Xidi Village in China I noticed this hard working woman. First she was digging in her garden plot and harvesting some huge pumpkins or gourds. A little later I saw her washing her sheets in the village pond, beating them on the rocks with a stick. Finally on my way back from the walk I found her carrying it all in a yoke contraption on her shoulders. A heavy load indeed, wet sheets, huge pumpkins (or gourds), her laundry detergent and her garden tools. This was all before breakfast. Talk about a hard worker. As it happens I bought a wooden carved hair pin from the same woman (her brightly dyed red hair made her very memorable) the night before, so I know her store was open late too. A woman's work is never done.
