These are sunfish of which there are lots of varieties. The pumpkinseeds I've painted are among the most handsome. They are experts at stealing bait or at hopping on the line when what you really want to bite is a great big bass. They stay in shallow water where the temperature's warmer and they love the sunshine, hence 'sunfish'. They are tasty though small, it takes a whole lot to make a meal. These are painted to scale and were caught in the Adirondacks.
