While in Mount Dora, FL, I first saw this unusual-blackish brown bird in the shallows on Lake Dora. While it looks like it has a red beak, on closer looking, the red is on the birds forehead and beak and the tip of the beak is yellow. I painted the bird first and then the waters around it- grasses, sticks and we saw a 3’ gator not far away but the bird paid no heed, even after seeing it snap at something in the nearby water.
