This painting was done "en plein air". It was a 20-minute uphill hike to the viewpoint that opens up this beautiful panorama of Hana town where I live on Maui. Hana is one of the most beautiful and isolated little communities in all of the Hawaiian islands. It is connected to the more touristic part of Maui by a long winding road (with 620 curves and 59 bridges!), the famous "Road to Hana" boasting of spectacular ocean vistas, waterfalls and hikes into Maui bamboo forests. Hana is tiny, private, undeveloped in the best way possible, strikingly beautiful. Despite a heavy tourist traffic coming through, it has managed to stay small and authentic, with hardly any commercial activity apart from a few food trucks, fruit stands and a couple of souvenir shops. Locals do their best to keep it this way. This painting was done "en plein air".
