Media: Fused Glass Sgraffito Drawing
Size: 7x5 in
'Frida' is the third in a series of fused glass powder sgraffito portraits I've been working lately titled 'Tragic Women in the Arts'.
I create freehand imagery by manipulating crushed black powdered glass on white sheet glass. I use biology needles, business cards, rubber tipped colour shapers, french curves, and other random 'tools' to create imagery in the glass powder. When the drawing is finished, it is slowly heated in a kiln until the particles begin to sinter. This process causes the particles to soften and together without fully melting, resulting in a permanent 'sugary' texture. Frida Kahlo was a a self-taught Mexican painter, and wife of painter Diego Rivera. She suffered immense pain through her life and endured many surgeries to repair her body from a serious trolley accident and childhood polio. Frida's paintings are deep, and the fact that she continued to paint even while lying in a body cast inspires me. Mounted on black wood and ready to hang..
