Media: Other Acrylic yarn on canvasboard
Size: 8x10 in
I enjoy painting still life. Much of the training I received learning how the Old Masters of art painted was by copying their still life paintings, including several by Chardin and Manet. So it is natural for me to take that knowledge into creating yarn paintings (without the nuanced aspect of oil paint, of course. This is "play" after all ;-)) You can observe that even in this unusual medium of yarn I am using classic composition ideas in all the yarn paintings. Here I am using the texture of the yarn to create a visual illusion of direction, shape and form. Horizontal strands of yarn create a tabletop, vertical lines create a wall or wallpaper, and spirals of yarn make the pink petals come forward visually. The blanket-weight yarn I am using doesn't allow for small details which is actually good because it is making me focus on effective simplicity. I've long admired and been fascinated by the Huichol yarn paintings of Mexico. My husband's sister Alice is saving yarn scraps for me, providing an unusual "palette" of colors. My husband and I made simple wood frames to offer as an option with these yarn paintings. This option is viewable and available on Etsy. Thank you for your interest in my art.
