Media: Gouache on paper
Size: 10x8 in
"Sky High" is a little gouache on paper I started as a demo for a class I was teaching at the LMFA Longview Museum of Fine Arts. This image was inspired by a boundlesss sky full of clouds over the Gulf of Mexico on our recent Royal Caribbean cruise out of Galveston. First, I drew a few quick thumbnails with a sharpie to plan out the composition, then I quickly blocked in the painting paying more attention to tonal values than color mixes. I used a very dry bristle brush with Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache to layer colors and refine some edges to complete the painting. The next day I decided I really liked the start of this painting and spent a little more time refining edges and bumping up the color in the clouds. I'll never grow tired of those views of the sky and water, so empty, so endless, so free and unspoiled by people.
"Sky High" in an unframed 10" x 8" gouache painting on paper. I add a light coat of varnish to my gouache paintings which gives them a slight sheen and helps protect the surface. Just pop it into a frame of your choosing to hang. "Sky High" is a little gouache on paper I started as a demo for a class I was teaching at the LMFA Longview Museum of Fine Arts.
