Scratchboard is the application of thousands of scratches in multiple layers to create an image. It requires scratching away the top layer (usually black India ink) to varying degrees exposing the layer beneath (usually white clay) to create an image. If color is desired it is applied in multiple layers with scratching in between to develop depth.
