One of my favorite authors, the Franciscan writer Richard Rohr, titled a book of his, "Everything Belongs". In it he made the case that ALL of the parts of your life, the sacred and profane, the triumphs and tragedies...it is all part of you life's journey…..and it all "belongs" in your story. Another writer, Nora Ephron also expressed this idea by saying of the 'ups' and 'downs' of life: "It's ALL copy". This particular painting/collage is a perfect illustration of this concept: I painted a floral still life over several days. It was, by turns, 'promising' and 'disappointing. You know how it is, artists always chasing the 'magic' we can picture in our heads, but almost always falling short... During the same time period I was painting these really 'free' little gouache floral still lifes at night on my desk. The stakes were low, just messing around and I liked quite a few of them. Then I returned to my big floral still life and had the notion to cut up my little gouache florals and work them into my big painting. It started to feel fun and free again...I even cut up a dress (indigo with white polka dots) to make the vase! It all worked, it ALL belonged. I am hoping I can translate this lesson into my everyday life, because l am a believer: Everything Belongs!
