The title of this mixed media still life is "Let's Throw Some Tea into the Harbor"; because today is Independence Day. And Independence Day is not about being a "loyal subject"...it is about declaring your right to self-determination. It is a celebration of our resistance to an authoritarian tyrant to preserve our liberty. It is about heartbroken people who eventually became enraged by the abuses of power and so they wrote the BEST BREAK-UP LETTER ever, and called it their "Declaration of Independence". We are a nation of rights and resistance...we see dissent, demands, and dignity as our birthright. So today, I want to suggest that it is all well and good to hang up flags, hang cool bunting around your porch, but ALSO maybe do some symbolic act (besides fireworks that terrify small children and animals) like throwing some tea into the nearest body of water???...to remind yourself how brave your forebears were and who you are.
