"Make A Plan" We all know that it is best to go to the supermarket NOT hungry and WITH a list. That keeps us from just grabbing stuff that we don't really need. The same is true in painting. When I plan a painting, the equivalent of a list is a "Notan": a Japanese term for a plan as to where the darkest darks are going to be, and the lightest lights. I can even make a little map of the image in black and white. The key is, once I get into luscious, seductive color...I still try to stick to my plan. I don't start grabbing colors like a hungry shopper grabs two bags of Cheetos...I make sure, that whatever color that I am using, it is the same value as what's on my map. So when I encountered these two fabulous women at the beach I immediately saw the strong 'light dark pattern...there was all that light flesh, EXCEPT the flesh in shadow was quite dark. Annnnnd, besides all of that, this image demonstrates one of my favorite beliefs: "The way to have a 'beach body', is to 1) have a body, and 2) go to the beach!" And don't you just love the cheeky woman on the left? She's splashing out in a 'two piece suit'. To quote Shania Twain, "Let's Go Girls!"
