Looking at this image of people sitting in dappled shade with a giant elephant ear plant leaf overhead, one wonders if large leaves did not give birth to the idea of umbrellas? I mean what if some animal 'ate' your shade leaf, or someone accidentally broke it off? Or drought caused it to wither? Voila: the umbrella was born!
