"Richer and Deeper-Blame It On The Empress" I decided last week to 'change my mind' about something. I usually try very hard to stop painting when a painting is first finished...meaning when it is fresh and loose...I try not to fuss with it because it usually only makes it tighter and stiffer. But after some time had passed, I decided to revisit these large oil panels, re-work, enrich, try to make them more like sumptuous tapestry panels. I blame this new desire, to 'keep going' with a painting, on the rich Autumnal colors, AND my recent viewing of the beautiful German production "The Empress"...so replete with Austrian empire textiles, gardens, richly decorated surfaces. I broke out the umbers and oxides and began to apply and then wipe off paint, along with 'massaging' the jewel tones. I worked on the two panels side by side, toggling back and forth, so that they would be sure to 'communicate with each other. I think this whole re-working process was some sort of metaphor...I just can't quite figure it out yet...
