Media: Mixed oil, charcoal, collage on brown butcher paper
Size: 35x24 in
Inspired by the work of Australian artist Diedre Bruhn, I reworked a portrait that I did of myself a while ago. I was in my favorite blue and white striped dress, sipping a cold drink and just STARING and thinking. (I added some cut-out paper giant beads, which I am ALWAYS hoping to find, in Bakelite, at some thrift shop!) As I talk to, and read about artists of every media, a few common themes recur: artists need solitude, time and space. And by space, I don't just mean "A Room of One's Own" (which is important to be sure)...but here I am referring to 'mental space...unfettered, unscheduled blocks of time...what writer Ann Patchett describes as "staring time". To the untrained eye, this will look like 'doing nothing'...but SO MUCH fermentation and germination can happen in that 'space'. So to my fellow creatives out there, I wish you some 'staring time' built into this week. (Small caveat: in our 'go go go', 'do do do', 'Jesus is coming, look busy' culture...staring and thinking is a VERY counter-cultural idea, so be careful out there!)
