Another place that designer Martin Bullard goes to unwind is San Miguel de Allende. I too have experienced San Miguel. Years ago, with the last two children still at home, we "won", in an auction, 9 days in a cool Mexican town near Mexico City. So the four of us traveled there. Upon arrival, one of the children began to throw up from altitude sickness, also, there was space under the doors to the outside and scorpions wandered in, and there was a sewer "situation" going on. Still, there were cool things to explore and we set about doing that...But a few days in, I realized that I was tantalizingly close to San Miguel de Allende, the town I'd learned about in Art History classes, the town where generations of artists (such as Milton Avery and other abstract expressionists) had gathered over the years. I HAD to go there. So we hired a driver (it was cheaper than four bus tickets) and got lots of local history on the drive there. Welllll....it was love at first sight: the color, the beauty, the architecture, the beauty, the bougainvillea spilling over the walls, the beauty! The kids and I promptly decided we would spend the rest of our trip THERE. My husband pointed out that we had a 'paid for' place in the other town. It was "Mutiny on the Bounty" right there in that gorgeous colonial town. Three of us announced that we were not leaving. Finally we compromised and stayed a few nights in SMA before we went back to out 'paid for' digs. But, may I just say, I was terribly proud to have raised children who, when they found themselves in a beautiful place, fought to stay there!!!
