If we learned anything from artisits like Richard Diebenkorn, it's that you can make a decision in your painting, then change your mind, then paint over previous marks and decisions. And leaving some evidence of previous decisions allows the viewer to see into the artist's progress and process. I think there is a metaphor here. The painting is certainly richer for the accretion of decisions and paint!
