Update: The Kentucky Derby is Saturday (5/3/2025) and I'm thinking Napoleon is a bit over-dressed to be a jockey this year. When I painted this we were just a few months into the pandemic. Now as I look at it, I can only think "Onward! Conquer!" As I started toning this panel, I noticed the shape of Napoleon's hat and then the horse. It seemed a familiar pose, so I googled Napoleon images and discovered the painting by Jacques-Louis David called "A Crossing at the St. Bernard Pass- Napoleon on His Horse". I used it as reference, but wanted to stay a bit wild and loose. I thought I might come back to it and do more, but no, I'm considering it finished.
