This sea shell is called a banded tulip (fasciolaria lilium) painted with dog whelks (nucella lipillus). Sea snails are hermaphrodites. Whelks love South Carolina because of the omnipresent oyster beds. Whelks are predatory and carnivorous. They eat oysters, worms, mussels , clams and other snails!
