Since I was very young, I have loved the idea of an island. They seemed to be places of adventure and freedom, compared to my own land-locked existence. While out on a boat with friends last summer, we passed this small cottage on a very small island. I loved how it fit in perfectly with the landscape, and that it sat by itself on the rocks. There are thousands of small islands up and down the Maine coast, and many of them have cottages on them. The larger islands have year-round communities. Many, however, are like this one, waiting for its summer owner to return and enjoy the solitude and beauty. Since I was very young, I have loved the idea of an island.
