The Columbia Gorge is filled with happy memories for me. As a family without means, we found our entertainment in things like picnics and camping. The Gorge was easy to access from our home in Portland, and not the crowded place it seems to be these days. My mother told stories of her father driving the family car and belongings to Portland from Chicago in the early 30's, along what is now the scenic highway. It was an engineering marvel at the time. Even now it can take one's breath away with it's turns and its vistas. This is from a recent trip along the Gorge. We could not explore some of the waterfalls and canyons because of fire damage causing dangerous conditions. I asked a forest ranger how long it would be before the trails opened again. He said that the first ten years after a major fire are the most dangerous as far as rock slides and falling trees. And so I will be too old when they open again. But they will open, and be explored by the next generation. And that's enough for me. The Columbia Gorge is filled with happy memories for me.
