This view. I can close my eyes and hear the wind on the water. Although there is no real tide on the Great Lakes, wind and storms and rising lake heights change the beaches from day to day and season to season. This tree has normally been at the edge of the woods, with a beach stretching out in front of it to the water. Last summer the water had risen all the way up and was undercutting the root system of one of our favorite trees, an old birch. It is the highest it has been in my three decades of visiting this place. But the view, it doesn't change. And it brings me peace and calm from a thousand miles away, as I wait out the winter to again make my way there. This view. I can close my eyes and hear the wind on the water.
