I grew up in one Portland and now live in the other, Oregon to Maine. The Columbia Gorge has always been a special place to my family. When my immigrant grandfather drove to Portland, he did so along the scenic highway that was then a new marvel of engineering. And my mother loved to take us out there for picnics and for the cooler air the waterfalls offered on hot summer days (I learned to swim in Benson State Park). I still love driving that highway, and was lucky enough to be visiting Oregon just after they reopened it after years of closures due to wildfires that raced through the lush gorge. This view of Multnomah Falls is imprinted on my soul, crowded with happy memories. Still as beautiful as ever. I grew up in one Portland and now live in the other, Oregon to Maine.
